I dowloaded and listened the the Chirpy/Chloe show today which I enjoyed, well done.
My only point is.....why is this show not broadcast on the bigL servers at some other time during the week? Most shows are VT'd these days so why not broadcast this recorded show and spice things up. If they did I would listen.
I think a few more might tune in.
Well done Eric for recognizing talent and using it.

Totally agree I am not often able to listen to SW Sat or Sun nights but would like to be able to hear it during the week without the bother of a download. Move aside million sellers!!!! _________________ David

Recently I've been listening to bigL very infrequently, however I'm clear what would help to bring me back.
Occasionally I hear the chloe/chirpy show on KBC, I'm sure that these 2 also work well on their own as well as together.
So why doesn't BigL broadcast 3 shows during each week...
a Chirpy show, a Chloe show and a Chloe/chirpy show.
Do BigL not actually wish to increase their listener base? I find their reluctance to take on volunteers (which would probably make 5 shows a week) very strange.

Hi Gary,
In theory, that would be great, we're both enjoying the joint venture and would equally be happy doing solo shows. In practice though, (putting aside the fact that those in charge aren't likely to let it happen) it's not possible at the moment because Chloe doesn't have her own studio. Her and Chris are looking at different equipment and hoping to put something together as soon as they can, but in the meantime they have to come over to my place at the weekend to do the show.
Apart from anything else, it would take a bit of pressure away from Roger who's working his socks off to keep the station going. |

Have to say Cloe and Chirps both sounding very much at ease and enjoying the new format, whilst playing some excellent music. Well worth a listen either on SW or via the Listen Again service. _________________

The show 'chirpy' does is ok and he is playing some good music and is having a good time doing it but it does sound amateur.
I would suggest that the long term plan for Big L would be to recruit high end professional presenters and I just don't think the 'chirpy' show is a polished radio show.
Not knocking anyone, the show sounds ok.

That wodn't really take any pressure off of Roger though- currently selector is scheduling the music at the touch of a button. If he was to take an external show this would mean having to load the show into rcs and then schedule around it thus creating extra work. |

High end pro presenters are unlikely to do a regular show for free, how would you pay these presenters? taking into account the income bigL is generating.
BigL has gone through a long period of investment initially from Ray Anderson and afterwards through Ian and Adam. At some point there has to be a return on that investment via advertising. Currently their listening figures are very low and so is their potential for attracting advertising.
Under these circumstances I would opt for good popular (perhaps unpolished) but entertaining presenters who are willing to donate their skills for free. I include both Chirpy an Roger Davis in this category.

The fact that the show is amateur (if you like to call it that) does not IMHO detract one little bit from the quality of the output. It's the enthusiasm and the passion that shines through. Sad to say, that's so different from what you get from many highly paid proffesionals today.
That's not to say there are not a lot of exceedingly good professionals too. Big L has been lucky enough to have the services of some highly dedicated and passionate presenters and it's these "big names" that are, were and will hopefully again be a major pull.
But there is surely room (especially now) in the (currently so barron) schedules for the amateur who is willing to provide perfectly good programming. I'd rather listen to an enthusiastic amateur than a non-stop juke-box or half-hearted VT inserts.
In short, the big names may be required to attract an audience, but it is the passion of all involved that will hold on to that audience. There's plenty of room for both and I firmly believe that Big L must take full advantage of all recources available to it if it is to prosper. _________________

I disagree.
If Big L is going to move forward then putting on amateur 'hobby' presenters is probably not what is going to make the station marketable for a sales team.
Commercial radio is not about putting on shows for the sake of it because it's 'better than nothing' it is about providing a high quality product that advertisers will buy into.
I appreciate that a handful of dedicated fans want to see the station succeed and play the music it played in 2005.... when they had no advertisers and were losing money like it was going out of fashion but surely the only place for such a radio station is on an internet stream.
If you want a Bigl that will be a credible alternative to the BBC then it will need to be something a bit more formatted and polished....
Thats just my opinion of course. |

Hooray, a debate at last! Just to let you know I just got whacked around the head with a newspaper by Chloé this afternoon. All will be revealed next Saturday night. In the meantime, let the debate continue...
Actually radio1395, you are correct, I am just an amateur, having not worked on the radio before, but Chloé has done a few shows on Big L, which makes her a professional. Maybe we could rename our show. "Am & Pro". |

Hi Chirps,
I have listened to your shows and they are entertaining and I have absolutely no doubt that you are passionate and enjoy what you do. Long may it continue.
I am pleased you have realised I am not disrespecting your efforts as you are having a go and that is the best way to get started with a radio 'career' if its something you are looking to undertake.
I have no doubt that with the right coaching and work you could become a competent presenter.
Good Luck. |
