I have listened to your shows and they are entertaining and I have absolutely no doubt that you are passionate and enjoy what you do. Long may it continue.
I am pleased you have realised I am not disrespecting your efforts as you are having a go and that is the best way to get started with a radio 'career' if its something you are looking to undertake.
I have no doubt that with the right coaching and work you could become a competent presenter.
Good Luck. |
Cheers radio 1395,
I took no offence whatsoever. I must admit I'm getting a bit too old in the tooth for coaching though. I prefer to send a sneak preview of the show to a small group of friends now and again and ask them to give us their honest opinion (but not a minute-by-minute report ). Then, Chloé and me try to put the comments into practice. I guess it's our desire to make the show sound like it's made for all our friends and family that makes it sound less professional. Trouble is, we like it like that.
Regards

Cookie,
Chris was more upset than me - it was his newspaper! |

Exactly! That's what makes it work, it has a friendly atmosphere. It's a show that talks to the listener, not at them. It's a show that listens to and involves it's audience and plays what they ask for, not what a computer tells them to play. It's radio that engages with its audience. In short it's real radio, not robot radio. _________________

Ok, your`ll all hate me for saying this.
But maybe, just maybe, thats not what will bring the advertising in. Playing music for "your mates" is fine and friendly but is it going to attract advertising.
We all know that The Chirpy Show is presented in a friendly way but we all must think about the business side of things, and before anything Big L is a business.
Then again is "non-stop" back to back music any better ?. "NO" maybe thats why Big L has lost so many supporters. Does it sound like any other internet station "YES".
Keep on doing what your doing Chirpy . |

100% agree, Cookie.
If I wanted 'professional' I would be listening to Heart etc. You can keep that.
Chirpy and most of the 2005 BigL presenters, come across as 'friends on the radio'. This is what makes the difference.
There are a few so-called professional presenters who manage this but not many.
Give me Chirpy, Chloe, Roger Davis etc rather than any of the 'professionals ' on Heart, Town 102, Kiss etc in East Anglia. |

Have to agree with you 100% Mel.
Trouble is advertising agengies seem to be locked into, shall we say "Standard Model Commercial Radio". That's probably largely what makes most radio so sterile bland these days. There's very little innovation anymore.
How you successfully break away from that model is the question, and one to which I for one have no answer _________________

What! You mean Window Cleaning?
Hi Mel,
Thanks for you comments (and thank you to everyone else who has chipped in with their support). Why should anyone hate you for saying what you said? Actually, the show has generated a little bit of advertising with the 'Rollerworld' ad. I know the original intention was just to play it as a 'Classic Commercial' but it snowballed into a weekly competition with tickets to go and skate or play Quasar - pity it's just local to Colchester and the surrounding area though.
Anyway, the reason I wrote is because I think maybe you took me a bit too literally when I said “it's our desire to make the show sound like it's made for all our friends and family”. By that I didn’t mean it excludes other people. Each week we get requests from regular listeners who we look forward to hearing from and it can be quite a challenge finding the songs they ask for. (I ended up buying the songs you mentioned by ‘The Free Design’ but I have no idea if you heard them played?) However, we also get regular reception reports from around the world – Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, Italy and the USA. All we’re expected to do is read the report out and Eric sends them a QSL card, but if they include an email address I’ll get in touch and ask them if they’d like a song played next time? They then become part of the ‘friends and family’. A guy called Alf from Sweden has had three songs played so far and Michele from Milano emailed to let us know he went to the University of Essex, which is just up the road from me. If we don’t hear from someone for a little while we’ll even include a song for him or her just to let them know we’re still thinking about them. This isn’t unique by the way; when I was going through a bad patch 18 months ago I would often hear my name mentioned and a song played for me by one of the Big L presenters, even though I hadn’t written in for ages. It would cheer me up no end.
I don’t usually listen to any other radio station, but every Monday night at McDonald’s they have Heart 96.1 piped through to the kitchen staff. The show they listen to is ‘Club Classics’. I thought it was quite good the first week, listening to disco songs I played in the mid and late 70’s. The following week I was surprised to hear all the same tracks – and the next week and the next. I asked one of the lads “Do they always play the same songs every week?” “No” he replied, “they play the same ones every night!” Okay, so our show is only on for an hour, but if you listened to them all back-to back (that’s 17 so far) I guarantee you won’t hear the same song twice (apart from the playout theme and anything we use to talkover). |

I was only referring to the comment "radio1395" made. About a radio show sounding professional enough to draw in the advertising.
People must not forget that Big L is a business first, and a radio station second. Thats where they went wrong before and we all know that.
What I (and others) dont understand is now its just an internet station the same as 1000s of others, playing music you can find anywhere.
Why do they not want a presented show put out each week, and not a "back to back" mix of music, is that going to attract an audience ? ?,
I dont think so
If you want to hear music "back to back" you play your i-pods or listen to a C.D, a human voice is so much better. "Even if its Chirpys" . |

Sadly i fear that until they finally realise "the model" is seriously flawed there will be no answer. |

Reception of Chirpy & Chloe on 6055 very good here last night. strong even with the rod aerial retracted. Very little fading into the bargain. _________________ David

I think you know I am a total support of Big L. But I totaly support what you are saying. During this last week I been making noises to certain people within. The answers getting no where. I may even be losing faith. |

Faith is everything folks----I had faith when Caroline went off air---I kept tuning around, bugging Peter Moore with letters and later on--e-mails and suddenly it was there again, not on AM but on satellite--it came and went again, it moved satellites but I and many others kept faith and it's still with us. It's not like BigL playing pop or oldies, it's an album station playing great tracks but then along came BigL giving us a great choice of popular music we oldies grew up with so now we had a choice unlike the monopolised national stations--Radio Crap 1,2 etc and others playing the same records day in and day out.
Caroline and BigL compliment each other by giving us "Music" not head banging monotonous noises all the time as played by the rest. Advertisers will go for the national stations but large companies keep their eyes on the smaller growing stations with cult followings and smaller companies look for cheap advert rates to gain a foothold so as Chirpy has proved with the skating rink ad---there's room and time for all. Get the station back, get some sponsors for the programmes and other ads will follow.
But the main thing is---have "FAITH"
I will gladly give £300 to have our Maltese company advertised on BigL on AM for a week---www.flutisatmalta.com for all your satellite needs plus a very informative satellite forum but BigL needs to return first. The offer is there.
